Social Justice Gardens

Overview

The Social Justice Gardens (SJG) is a Lowell Bennion Center student directed program focused on environmental justice and education. SJG operates as a volunteer organization for University of Utah students tobecome more aware of environmental and social injustice within Salt Lake City. SJG operates a community-classroom garden at Mountain View Elementary School in West Valley. SCIF funded the purchase of garden equipment to help enhance the productivity of the garden.

Impact

The garden provides a source of food security and self-reliance for 15 families. The program incorporates University of Utah volunteers in classroom education and after school workshops for Mountain View students and their families. Another benefit of the garden is water conservation. The gardens use 50% less water than the preceding sod.

Budget

$1,000.00 went towards garden tools and seeds.
