The University of Utah strives to achieve sustainable solutions in many arenas, including operations. On campus, efficiency and conservation programs demonstrate the University’s commitment to environmental stewardship and fiscal responsibility. Campus operations are managed by staff, largely in the Facilities Management department, but student and faculty input are encouraged to improve the overall utility of the University. The Climate Action Plan outlines operational goals that will help the University be carbon neutral by 2050. Individuals can help the University toward this goal by making smarter choices, such as bicycling, taking public transit, turning off electrical equipment, and reducing waste. University staff, faculty, and administration can also incorporate better choices in how they perform day-to-day business operations.

The U also serves as a living laboratory where students and faculty assist in determining solutions to campus sustainability issues, including topics ranging from the campus bicycle master plan to establishing green building and landscaping guidelines.
