A Resource Efficient Campus

Marriott Library Plaza and UMFA with Mt. Olympus in the backgroundSustainability at the University of Utah is being achieved by the participation of many dedicated students, faculty and staff.  On the campus, efficiency and conservation programs not only demonstrate the University's commitment to environmental stewardship, they also show vigilance for fiscal responsibility.  While campus operations are managed by staff members, student and faculty input on these programs is encouraged.  There is much essential work to be done to achieve our Climate Action Plan goals. Individuals can help reduce our carbon footprint by engaging in simple acts such as bicycling or taking mass transit to campus rather than driving, or by bringing a reusable mug or bottle for consuming beverages on campus.

A University of Utah goal is to have campus serve as a living laboratory where faculty and students help determine appropriate solutions for sustainability issues on campus from bicycle parking to green building and landscaping.  Contact the Office of Sustainability to get involved in these efforts.  A few recent class projects include:
  • MBA Field Study students studied the feasibility of Solar Parking Canopies on campus
  • MPA students designed a Sustainability Literacy Survey to determine if students were acquiring sustainability knowledge while at the University of Utah
  • Cartography students analyzed a campus sustainability map (pdf) and offered design solutions
