Join the University of Utah in celebrating Earth Month 2026 this April! This year's theme is "Sustainability is Always in Fashion."
Did you know that 85% of all textiles are sent to the landfill each year (UNECE, 2018)? That's 21 billion tons. One garbage truck of clothing is burned or dumped in a landfill every second, and less than 1% of the material used to produce clothing is recycled to produce new clothing (Ellen MacArthur Foundation, 2017). The fashion industry has a massive ecological footprint, which is why we selected the theme "Sustainability is Always in Fashion" to encourage our campus community to reflect on the intersections between fashion and sustainability, the impacts our clothing has on our environment and our global community, and how we can make a difference.
