Enhancing student success through strategic integration

Dear Colleagues,

The University of Utah is pleased to announce that its Sustainability Office has joined the Office of Undergraduate Studies and will be reimagined as the Office for Sustainability Education (OSE). This strategic integration marks an exciting step forward in advancing the university’s commitment to sustainability through student success, transformative education, and societal impact.

The move represents a powerful alignment of the missions and core values of both offices. OSE will continue to empower students, employees, and the broader community through education, engagement, and collaborative action to build sustainable futures. They join Undergraduate Studies in working to ensure every student can have an exceptional educational experience that empowers them to lead transformative lives. Together, these two units embody the University of Utah’s broader mission to inspire students, promote well-being, and serve communities.

OSE's migration supports the university’s vision to improve the life of every Utahn by connecting sustainability education with academic innovation. Students will benefit from a richer, more connected undergraduate experience that includes expanded learning opportunities, both in and beyond the classroom.

Vice Provost for Student Success T. Chase Hagood is excited about the possibilities and opportunities presented by this new venture. “Students will gain increased access to sustainability-focused curricula, research, and experiential learning opportunities that connect them with local, national, and global communities,” Hagood expressed. “These experiences foster leadership, community engagement, and a sense of purpose — things essential to the success of today’s learners.”

Ginger Cannon, interim director of the Sustainability Office shared her enthusiasm as well, “since 2007, the Sustainability Office has worked to integrate sustainability education across the curriculum and provide programs and events that inspire students to take climate action. This moment marks a powerful new chapter — one that fosters deeper collaboration with faculty, empowers student leadership, and elevates sustainability as a critical tool for engaged learning. A growing campus requires new approaches, and we are excited to continue innovating within the Office of Undergraduate Studies.”

Additional details on the move will be shared as plans are finalized.

Together, we are building a more sustainable and student-centered University of Utah —  preparing every student to lead, innovate, and create a better future for all.

Onward,
Chase Hagood
