If you have any questions after reviewing this information, please contact Emerson Andrews at 801-581-7510 or emerson.andrews@utah.edu
- Your grant size should depend on your budget needs.
- Those working on projects for course credit are recommended to apply for small or medium grant awards.
- Those who have the flexibility to work on a project over multiple semesters are invited to apply for all three sizes of grants.
- Medium grant projects that require a high degree of campus approval or have a high degree of complexity may be asked to apply with large grants so applicants can have increased levels of support during the design and implementation processes.

The Experiential Green Grant (EGG) Fund is committed to making sustainability funding more accessible to all students. To help reduce financial barriers to participation, students may apply for a compensation stipend as part of their EGG Fund grant application.
The stipend is intended to support students who may otherwise be unable to dedicate the time needed to develop and implement a sustainability project. Applicants may request $150–$500 per semester, depending on the scope of their project, anticipated time commitment, and demonstrated need.
Grant funding and stipend funding are evaluated separately. A project may receive full grant funding while receiving partial or no stipend funding based on the EGG Fund Allocation Committee's review. As part of the application, students will be asked to indicate their requested stipend amount, estimate the number of hours they expect to spend on the project during the semester, and explain how receiving a stipend will support their ability to complete the project.
Who is eligible for a stipend?
Current undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Utah are eligible to apply for an EGG Fund stipend.
Students are not eligible to receive a stipend if the proposed project:
- Is conducted as part of a thesis or dissertation.
- Fulfills the requirements of a course.
- Is part of paid employment.
- Is undertaken as part of another extracurricular commitment for which compensation or academic credit is already provided.
Why are student stipends offered?
Many sustainability projects require significant time, coordination, and leadership outside of the classroom. Students balancing employment, financial responsibilities, or other personal commitments may not have the capacity to participate without financial support.
The EGG Fund stipend helps remove these barriers by providing compensation for the time students invest in developing projects that benefit the university community. By expanding access to funding, the EGG Fund encourages a broader and more diverse group of students to participate in experiential sustainability initiatives.
How much can I receive?
Students may request between $150 and $500 per semester. Stipend amounts are determined based on project scope, anticipated workload, demonstrated need, and available funding.
How do I apply?
The stipend application is included within the EGG Fund grant application and consists of several brief questions, including:
- The amount of stipend funding requested.
- An estimate of the number of hours you expect to dedicate to the project during the semester.
- A description of how those hours will be spent.
- An explanation of how the stipend will support your ability to complete the project.
How is the stipend distributed?
Approved stipends are distributed as a one-time transfer to the receiving university department, which then provides the funds to the student in accordance with university policies and procedures.
Can I receive a stipend for multiple semesters?
Yes. Students may receive stipend funding for up to two semesters (one academic year), provided the project continues to meet EGG Fund requirements. For projects extending beyond one year, continued stipend support may be considered on a case-by-case basis by the EGG Fund Allocation Committee.
Can multiple students receive stipends for the same project?
Due to limited funding, each EGG Fund project is eligible for one stipend allocation. If multiple student applicants are leading the project, the approved stipend may be shared among them, but the total stipend amount cannot exceed the award allocated to the project.
In 2026 the Sustainable Campus Initiative Fund (SCIF) was renamed the Experiential Green Grant fund. View our annual reports below to see what past projects have been funded.
