The University of Utah strives to provide sustainable built environments for its students, employees, and visitors. 


Energy at the University 

Most of the energy used by the University comes from fossil fuel sources, such as coal and natural gas; building electricity and heating and cooling account for three-quarters of the University’s tracked greenhouse gas emissions. To improve the University’s energy consumption, the Energy Management Office focuses on savings opportunities from occupant behavioral changes, energy efficiency upgrades, installation of renewable technologies, and more, which will also reduce overall operating costs.

What the University is Doing

Sustainable Building Design and Construction

All new buildings costing over $2.5 million are required to achieve Silver Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED). LEED addresses many facets of sustainability, including increasing energy and water efficiency, landscaping using water-wise techniques, reducing the impact of storm water, and more. Solar Energy

The University has an on-going program to strategically install solar energy whenever possible. There are several solar arrays on campus buildings and several solar projects planned or under construction. For more information see our list of campus solar projects.

Energy Efficiency and Conservation

The University of Utah Facilities Management includes the Energy Management Office. This office promotes and supports energy efficiency and conservation efforts on campus like LED lighting, pursuing utility rebates, and supporting new construction and renovations.

What You Can Do

Little things can add up to big savings. If you are the last person in a room—even a bathroom or conference room—turn off the lights. Also remember to turn off your workstation, including your computer, monitors, printers, etc. Use task lighting, such as desk lamps, instead of overhead lighting.
