Waste and Recycling

The University of Utah is committed to first, reducing campus waste; second, reusing products that can be given a second life; and third, recycling, which diverts waste away from the landfill to recycling facilities.

Recycling programs

Main Campus

The main campus recycling program includes separate bins for plastics #1 & #2, white office paper and mixed paper, and aluminum cans. In addition, the Facilities Management can collect on request printer cartridges, cardboard, pallets, and potentially other difficult-to-recycle items. Contact Recycling Coordinator for more information. Main campus is implementing a pilot glass collection in Fall 2016.

Composting

Currently, Chartwell’s is composting pre-consumer items. The University is exploring an upcoming opportunity to add post-consumer composting in dining areas in the near future.

Surplus & Salvage

Surplus & Salvage receives all University-owned equipment once its original owner decides to discard it. They offer the equipment for resale and discard the items they can’t sell. Their efforts save many tons of furniture and equipment from being thrown in Salt Lake’s landfills each year.

Occupational and Environmental Health and Safety

The Occupational and Environmental Health and Safety (OEHS) department manages the University’s compliance with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Utah Division of Environmental Quality. Contact OEHS to request for pick up for any hazardous materials.

What You Can Do

Waste is a byproduct of living; it is important that each individual takes charge of personal waste and be responsible for reducing waste, reusing items, and distributing recyclables into the proper bins.
