Transportation significantly impacts our environment and air quality. University-owned vehicles, as well as employee and student commuting and air travel, account for nearly 20 percent of the total greenhouse gas emissions tracked by the university. Together we can reduce the U’s emissions contribution from transportation through efforts to decrease commuting trips in single-occupant vehicles.
What the University is Doing
Commuter Services and Transit
Commuter Services manages the vehicle parking and permit program, UTA Ed Pass program and campus shuttles. This department provides information about getting to campus, getting around campus and a live shuttle map.
Ride Free with Your U-Card
The UTA Ed Pass is available to all students, faculty, and staff of the university. The pass includes unlimited transit access to UTA buses, TRAX, and FrontRunner, making it easy to get to campus car-free. The pass is enabled on your U-Card.

University-Owned Vehicle Fleet
The University of Utah works to consider fuel type, fuel efficiency, emissions and life-cycle costs in all vehicle purchases. Toward that end, the U has taken the following steps:
- Campus grounds department uses several zero-emissions electric trucks.
- The campus shuttle bus system is transitioning to compressed natural gas (CNG) and electrically-powered buses.
- Commuter Services is expanding electric vehicle charging station infrastructure. Please contact Commuter Services directly with any questions or concerns regarding the charging infrastructure.
- University Fleet Services is expanding its rental fleet to include electric vehicles, hybrids and CNG options.
Active Transportation
Active transportation is self-propelled, human-powered transportation such as walking, biking, and skateboarding. Past commuter surveys indicate that nearly half of the campus population arrives by means other than driving alone. The University of Utah promotes the use and benefits of active transportation by employing an Active Transportation Manager, supporting a bikeable campus through Bicycle Friendly University Certification, and hosting events to encourage more people to go by foot and bike to their destinations.
