Sustainability Course Attribute (SUST)


The Sustainability Course Attribute (SUST) is awarded to courses that incorporate key sustainability concepts and align learning outcomes with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These courses, available across various departments at the University of Utah, are listed in the general course catalog and semester class schedules.

Earn $1,000 while learning about integrating sustainability into courses and qualify to apply for a small grant funding to integrate sustainability into the curriculum.

Demonstrates the university’s comprehensive sustainability curriculum, recognized by STARS (Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System). Supports Education Goal 2.0 of the university's Climate Action Plan (CAP): Graduate students with knowledge and skills to address climate-related challenges and opportunities.

Requirements for a SUST Course


Applications are reviewed by the Sustainability Education Advisory Committee (SEAC), which includes representatives from multiple colleges and departments at the University of Utah.

  • To qualify for the SUST attribute, courses must meet the following criteria:

    1. Explore four SDGs or Sustainability Topic Areas in the course content.
    2. Link two SDGs directly to course learning outcomes.
    3. Include a SUST attribute section in the syllabus, which:
      • Identifies the four SDGs addressed in the course.

    Defines two learning outcomes that integrate these SDGs.

    1. Review the criteria and prepare your syllabus.
    2. Submit the application Form.

Timeline & Important Deadlines


  • Applications are accepted at any time and are reviewed during  Spring and Fall semesters.
  • May 30, 2025: Attendees of the Sustainability Teaching Workshop (May 2025) must submit applications by this date to qualify for $1,000 in professional development funds.
  • November 7, 2025: Submit applications by this date for inclusion in the Fall review. Approved courses will be listed in the general course catalog for the following academic year.

Once approved, the SUST attribute is valid for five years, after which a renewal application is required.
